A home you’ve never known. A language you no longer speak. A history you seek to uncover. A childhood you can never return to.
Homesick explores the many ways we can long for a place, a people, or a time that is distant, lost, inherited, or imagined. We’re drawn to stories of nostalgia, heritage, displacement, belonging, and the histories we carry with us—across borders, across generations, and through the stories we tell ourselves; the space between what we remember and what we inherit; between the home we knew and the home we imagine. We’re interested in what happens when a place becomes a memory, a story becomes a history, or a history becomes something we carry with us.
IN PARTICULAR
Social & Political Realities: Work engaging with the social, environmental, political, and economic realities of a place or community. We want lived-in perspectives, honest complexity, and systemic awareness—not caricatures or exploited hardship.
Folklore & Inheritance: Folktales, traditions, superstition, family stories, and the folklore that shapes our understanding of the home we come from.
Nostalgia & Memory: Writing about the places, people, periods of life, and versions of ourselves we can no longer return to—or perhaps never truly knew.
Migration & Inherited Homes: Stories of leaving one home for another, living between places, or growing up with a home you know only secondhand. We’re interested in the distance between where we are, where we come from, and where we’re going—migration as evolution.
We’re particularly interested in Appalachian, Ukrainian, Palestinian, and Romani voices, though we welcome work from anywhere that embodies the spirit of Homesick.
